DEMO 5– Boa Vista island, CAPE VERDE

Retrofitting of a 500 m³ Positive Cold Room

The DEMO5 project on Boa Vista Island showcases the potential of AGRI-COOL innovation in retrofitting existing cold rooms, addressing critical environmental and operational inefficiencies. This positive cold chamber, housed in an industrial building, is a prime example of the challenges posed by outdated refrigeration systems.

Key Features of the Current Cold Room:

– Volume & Structure: 500 m³ chamber with a surface area of 130 m², a height of 3.8 m, and 12 cm-thick insulated walls.

– Location & Shading: Situated within an industrial building, shaded by the structure’s walls, with negligible solar radiation impact.

– Energy Profile: The chamber currently relies on a diesel engine, consuming approximately 15,850 kWh annually to counteract heat losses.

Environmental and Economic Impact:

– GHG Emissions: Annual emissions of around 10.4 tCO₂eq due to the high-emission diesel generator.
– Operational Costs: Fuel expenses range from €7,100 to €14,100 annually, depending on diesel prices.

The Retrofit Solution:

The AGRI-COOL retrofit will demonstrate how innovative cooling solutions can reduce greenhouse gas emissions, lower energy costs, and enhance the sustainability of cold chain operations. By upgrading this facility, DEMO5 aims to set a benchmark for retrofitting inefficient systems across similar contexts globally.
